IELTS TOEFL Essay Topic: Education (curriculum)

It has been observed in many countries recently that fewer students are choosing to pursue studies in the sciences. Why is this happening? How might society be impacted by this?

All over the world nowadays, young people in academia are increasingly moving away from the sciences. There are several reasons for this, as well as serious implications for the world at large.

The main reasons for this shift are likely related to incomes and job satisfaction. In terms of the former, most scientists do not earn great salaries. Of course, if one discovers a new medicine or invents a popular gadget, this can result in a major financial boon. However, most scientists will never have this opportunity; in fact, many will spend many years learning one subject and then work on one project for their entire careers. Thus, the repetitive work of scientists, such as sitting in a lab conducting experiments over and over again, is another reason many students today prefer to major in subjects that will lead to employment in more exciting, or at least more profitable fields.

Given the above reasons, and the probability that this trend will continue, society faces certain dangers. Scientists contribute to society in many ways, such as by advancing healthcare, tackling climate change, reducing food insecurity, creating exportable technology, and other ways. Thus, a reduction in the number of science graduates can, in the long run, hurt society in terms of its people’s health and economic strength. In addition, if more students move towards subjects such as business, media studies, or other popular fields, the careers associated with these will become overcrowded, resulting in higher unemployment and more damage to the economy.

Thus, the more young people move away from the sciences, the greater the risks the world faces. As a society, we should consider ways to encourage more students to engage in these fields.
