Some people think that parents should discourage their children from pursuing an education in the arts. They argue that children should instead focus on the maths and sciences as these are areas that can lead to good jobs and help society. Do you agree with this approach to education?

With an increasingly competitive jobs marketplace many parents prefer their kids study only STEM courses, reasoning that these subjects will improve their children’s career outlook whereas the arts will not. While these science and math courses are undeniably important, I believe kids should indeed study art as doing so will offer them even more options than concentrating on one area alone.

Many parents do not realize that the arts are not limited to painting or music. These days, the arts include graphic design, architecture, photography and video editing, among many other tech-based fields. In other words, modern art has embraced technology, and those who have the knowledge and talent to blend their imagination with technical skills are almost unlimited in their career options.

In addition, countless studies have proven that art is highly conducive to creative thinking as well as the development of critical analysis, organization, and adaptability skills. In terms of building a career, even if one wants to be an engineer or a doctor, these skills are extremely useful and sought after by employers. Thus, a company that wants a staff member who can begin to work at a high pace right away and adapt to a changing environment will likely steer clear of a candidate who is one-dimensional.

To illustrate the value of studying art, simply look at Steve Jobs. Having dropped out of his college program, Mr. Jobs continued to sit in on art classes, especially calligraphy. This led to his conception of different fonts in word processing, which underpinned Apple Co.’s rise as a major corporation, and Jobs as an icon. To this day, in fact, Apple is a leading international company because it appeals to the artistic nature of its millions of users.

To conclude, children should undoubtedly engage in practical subjects such as math. However, it is equally important to infuse those studies with artistic skills and knowledge to create a more complete and better-equipped employee for the modern workplace.
