IELTS General: Letters of Complaint and Praise

See a Task 1 writing sample for the IELTS General exam. Below are two letters, one of complaint and one of praise.

You recently ordered furniture from an online retailer. The delivery and installation experience was very disappointing/satisfying. Write a letter to the manager of the online store to complain about/praise the service.

In your letter:

  • say what you ordered
  • explain what happened/describe the service
  • tell the manager how you feel
Letter of Complaint

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to notify you of the terrible service your company has provided as well as the totally unprofessional attitude and incompetence of your delivery person.

Last week, I ordered a new sofa from your online catalogue. The delivery arrived two days later than expected, with no notification. Despite being already annoyed when the driver arrived, I was polite and even offered to help him with the sofa. He refused and proceeded to move the sofa and ended up scratching my floor and a couple of walls. He did not even apologize for this. He simply set up the sofa and left. He even had the nerve to wait for a tip.

I am very angry and will certainly never buy from your store again. At this point, however, I would like you to send me a 33% refund for the sofa for the damage caused by your driver. If you do not reply positively to this letter, I will go to your review page and copy this letter onto the comments section word for word.

Letter of Praise

Dear Acme Staff,

I am writing to express my appreciation for your recent delivery. The experience was easy from start to finish and your delivery staff did a great job.

I ordered a sofa from your online catalogue last week. It arrived after two days, as promised, and looked even better than in the picture on your website.

Your delivery guys were very professional and courteous. They made sure to handle the sofa carefully so as not to damage it or my floors and walls. They even took off their shoes when they came into the house. They set the sofa where I asked, put on the bases and collected the packing materials and took it with them.

I love my new sofa and it looks great in my living room. I just wanted to say thank you and to let you know that I will recommend your store to all my friends. I will certainly think of you first when I need new furniture in the future.
