You borrowed some books from your school or college library. Unfortunately you have to go away to visit a sick relative and cannot return the books in time.
Write a letter to the library. Explain what has happened and tell them what you want to do about it.
I am writing this letter in regards to books that I have borrowed two weeks before and the duo date is March 25th. I am a regular borrower and always return books on time however because of uncontrolled circumstances, I will not be able to bring them back this time.
My father suffers from a heart problem for long time. The physician decided to perform an urgent surgery because my father’s condition has seriously developed. I decided to stay with him in this distress. Because my flight is tomorrow and the time is very narrow, I am very sorry to say that the books will not be returned in time.
I am very sorry for any inconvenience, I understand that these books may be reserved by another colleague but, this is an urgent matter that needs an immediate action. I promise I will return the books back after my arrival. Please accept my sincere apology.
You have recently returned from an out-of-town business trip. In your rush to leave the airport you picked up someone else’s suitcase and only realized your mistake when you arrived at your home and saw their personal information on the tag.
Write an email to the suitcase’s owner. In your letter
• explain the situation
• apologize for your error
• ask to arrange a return of the luggage
Dear Michael Smith,
My name is Paul Brown. I am writing to you to let you know I have your suitcase and to apologize for having taken it accidentally.
I was on your flight from Chicago yesterday, and in my rush to leave the airport (I was in a hurry to get home to see my children), I picked up your luggage instead of mine. As our suitcases look identical, I just assumed I had grabbed my own and did not look at the identification tag.
I am sure you are worried about your belongings and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience I may have caused you. I had never done anything like this before. Please rest assured that your suitcase and its contents are safe.
I will be available to meet you at a time and place convenient to you in order to return your bag, or, if you prefer, I can arrange to have it couriered to you. Please reply to this email address, or you can call me at 555-3456 to arrange a meeting.
Once again, I am sorry to have caused you any trouble. I look forward to your reply.
